A friend just told me that she had given a GD and the topic was Narendra Modi : The future Prime minister?I was appalled to know that many of the candidates spoke in favor of the topic. well, nothing to get really surprised about the opinions of my college mates who are obviously lesser mortals than the big corporate tycoons like Ratan Tata and Mukesh Ambani. what really surprises me is the reaction of these biggies to Narendra Modi’s initiatives.
After Narendra Modi gave an easy entry to the TATAs in Gujarat, he was hailed as a messiah of the corporate India by the corporate bigwigs. In my opinion this is nothing more than lobbying for future favors by our corporate baadshahs.
Consider these facts. Before Modi, Gujarat was among the top states in India and was famous for its exports as it now is. Before Narendra Modi took charge of the state, Gujarat was among the states having the least no. of people under poverty line. And it continues to rank well in this parameter. More than 80% of the trade and commerce that takes place in the state is in unorganized sector. As we know this un-organized sector comprises of small and individual entrepreneurs, families who have been into business since decades. No doubt that the much-revered prosperity of the state is because of the contribution of these small businesses that dominate the commerce in the state. And yes, who doesn’t relate businessmen to gujaratis who belong to a culture in which business is knit inseparabely and for centuries business has been the main bread winning activity.
This makes it clear that Narendra Modi’s contribution is nothing to celebrate about for Gujarat’s prosperity. And how can one forget the ghastly Gujarat riots during which many of our innocent brothers and sisters lost their lives for no single reason but the negligence of the government. God, it sends me shivers when I think of Modi as the Prime Minister.
India is a land of diverse cultures. Tata’s bad time in Singur was not due to Buddha Deb Bhattacharjee’s incapability or uninterest. But because of the conservative culture of the state and the community’s aversion to business activities.
With the kind of autonomy states enjoy Narendra Modi as a Prime Minister won’t be anything but a failure as his tactics won’t work in India taking all the states together. And lets not forget the black spot in the history of his ministership(Gujarat riots). Let him not take the advantage of the fact that Public memory is short.
